Coal worker dies after maintenance incident

A man has died in hospital after an incident at the Goonyella Riverside Mine in Queensland on August 5.

BHP announced on August 7 the death of a contractor from Independent Mining Services, who was working at the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) mine.

BHP said the incident occurred during maintenance work.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and support to his family, colleagues and friends at this very sad and difficult time,” the mining company said in a statement.

“A full investigation is underway and BMA will continue to work closely with relevant authorities. Support services are in place for family, friends, the contractors involved and all of our people at Goonyella Riverside Mine.”

Queensland minister for state development and natural resources and mines Dr Anthony Lynham called the incident “tragic”.

“Our mines inspectors have been at the mine since the weekend undertaking a thorough investigation into the cause and nature of the incident,” the minister said.

“Every worker in Queensland deserves the right to come home from work safely each day.”
