Heavy equipment business Hyster has been selected to supply rail transport business Pacific National with 31 machines.
Pacific National selected Hyster to deliver 21 reach stackers, 5 masted container handlers and 5 heavy duty forklifts.
Two of the five forklifts will boast 48 tons of lifting capacity; three will have 18 tons of lifting capacity.
Working with Pacific National and one of its dealers, Adaptalift, Hyster evaluated several PN sites – Perth, Melbourne, Moolabin, Townsville, Adelaide and Sydney – where trucks will be deployed in rail terminals, moving containers, trailers and steel coils.
“A good analysis of each site’s application, together with the detailed tender document allowed us to provide tailored solutions for each site, meeting Pacific National’s diverse requirements,” manager of Hyster’s Big Truck Application Center Jan-Willem van den Brand said.
“The tender focused on total cost of ownership, ergonomics and safety.”

Hyster said since Pacific National’s various rail sites handle different types of loads, ranging from high top containers with round roofs to curtain containers with bottom pick points, the rail company needed solutions that were adaptable.
To meet these requirements, Hyster will provide customized reach stackers, designed to allow operators to easily swap between a standard container spreader to a piggy back spreader, enabling quick response to changing operational demands of loads and helping to optimize fleet usage.
In the company’s Melbourne steel handling location, a Hyster RS46-41XLS with 7500mm/295 inch wheelbase and stabilizers will be equipped with a tool changer, so it can switch between a c-hook for coil handling and a spreader for container handling, the company explained.
The c-hook will allow the truck to pick up 32 ton coils from the second rail – a factor Hyster credits to its Stabilizer Control System. The system is designed to optimally spread the load over the stabilizer and the tyres for good stability in all directions.
Three 18 ton trucks will be supplied with special coil handling carriages optimized for this application, and chamfered forks.
